Dr. Matthew Larson is a native of Hitchcock County, Nebraska where he grew up on his family’s farm. He enlisted in the US Army and became a Combat Medic and later a Physical Therapy Technician. He received an Army Green-to-Gold Scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science. He was accepted into the prestigious US Army Baylor Physical Therapy Program, where he earned both Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Physical Therapy.
In 2006 Dr. Larson became board certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS), a designation held by only 10% of physical therapists. He then completed further training and certification in The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) for treatment of back, neck, and extremities disorders. He is a long-standing member of the American Physical Therapy Association and a member of the Pelvic Health section, as well as a member of the North American Menopause Society, with licenses to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
Dr. Larson’s career in the US Army includes assignments as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Physical Therapy Clinic at the 67th Combat Support Hospital in Wurzburg, Germany; Officer-in-Charge of Inpatient Physical Therapy at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio TX; Chief of the Physical Therapy Department at Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley KS, and as a Company Commander at Fort Benning GA rehabilitating wounded warriors. He deployed with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, as their Brigade Physical Therapist for 16 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from September 2006- November 2007. He was the first physical therapist to be assigned and deployed with “America’s First Team” and provided rehabilitative care for servicemen and women at Forward Operating Bases Falcon and Prosperity.
Dr. Larson retired from the US Army in 2013 and became a Clinical Operations Manager for Kaiser Permanente where he supervised Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language-Pathology operations in the Mid-Atlantic region. It was during this tenure that he became aware of the acute shortage of physical therapists trained and qualified to treat pelvic health conditions.
Because of this shortage, he began the coursework and training needed to become board certified in pelvic health. He has completed courses in Pelvic Function 1, 2A, 2B, Sexual Medicine in Pelvic Rehab, Oncology, Yoga for Pelvic Pain, Trauma Awareness for the Pelvic Therapist and Inclusive Care for Gender and Sexual Minorities, from the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Larson’s schedule is available for patients seeking treatment and rehabilitative care for pelvic floor concerns, orthopedics, sports injuries and spine pain.
In his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife, their two Australian Shepherds, five horses, and countless chickens on their small farm near Jefferson, MD.
